Theis Day Adventure

Mame Fatou and I go for our day adventure to Theis. We take a taxi to the departure point, and thanks to several questions posed by Mame Fatou, we find the area where the "sept-places" leave from for various for Theis.

Theis is a former colonial town, and MF's research showed that it might be an interesting town, architecturally wise. In fact, we did enjoy our wander through the former colonial mansion section of the town. The streets were wide and lined with trees.

Note: I had missed the trees in the banlieu of Dakar. MF told me that there had been many trees but that these had all been cut down for firewood. Now people use kerosene burners to cook there meals, if they do not have electricity.

But before we set off for our walk, we actualized a wish of mine and I had an espresso cafe with powdered milk so rich it was like cream (not available in this format in Canada - I have looked), and a full cheese omelette breakfast.
Before leaving, we stopped in an somewhat well-known area of Artists. The artists were talented and happy to show us their work. We are almost the only tourists there as it was the off-season.  I had one negative experience with an artist who tried to manipulate me to buy by implying I was selfish, but apart from that, it was a great stop off.

During my visit in Senegal, there was no pressure to purchase. I was mostly on public Vs tourist beaches, and I had decided not to brave the huge touristic markets. The only consumer choices I made revolved around food, purchasing a basic French book I could share with nieces, and, finally, at the airport, purchasing novels by Senegalese writers. During my stay, I had more than one in-depth discussion around a novel I had read the last time out: Une si longue lettre by Mariam Ba.
